About Taunton
Taunton is Somerset’s County town and is steeped in history. Situated in close proximity to our beautiful coastline, it is the gateway to the South West of England and is a busy yet safe market town with an excellent reputation for outstanding education.
King's College is located within fifteen minutes walking distance of the town centre, and is a ten minute drive from the train station, and a 5-10 minute drive from the bus station. Local shops sell a variety of produce: there are supermarkets, as well as independent and high street retailers in abundance.
Pupils have town time each Wednesday afternoon when they are able to walk into town to access the local amenities. There are lots of small shops and larger supermarkets located centrally as well as banks and restaurants.
Exploring Somerset
Taunton is home to excellent sporting facilities including the County Cricket ground, local football and rugby clubs and Taunton Racecourse. The town also makes an ideal base for exploring the nearby Blackdown Hills, a strip of countryside along the Devon/Somerset border, which was designated an "area of outstanding natural beauty" in 1991.
The nearby Quantock Hills are another local feature to be enjoyed. Each year, many of our pupils undertake navigation exercises as part of their training for the annual Ten Tors event, as well as for their DofE Gold and Bronze awards.
