We recently gathered for one of the most beloved traditions here at King’s, our annual Chinese New Year Supper, a celebration we have proudly hosted since 2008. This year, we welcomed the Year of the Snake, a zodiac sign known for its intelligence, wisdom, humour, determination, imagination, care, and passion - traits that were certainly reflected in the spirit of the evening.
Over the years, this event has become a beloved highlight of the school calendar for both pupils and staff. With its vibrant atmosphere and rich cultural traditions, it’s no wonder the catering team calls it their favourite event of the year. The celebration brings everyone together to enjoy a delicious meal while embracing Chinese culture in a warm and welcoming setting.
An evening highlight was the beautifully delivered multilingual speeches by our Upper Sixth pupils. Kevin delivered his address in Mandarin, while Ryan provided a seamless English translation, concluding with a heartfelt poem he wrote about "The Snake." Nixon then captivated the audience with his eloquent speech in Cantonese, showcasing the depth of linguistic and cultural appreciation.
For many of our pupils, especially those far from home, this supper is a comforting reminder of important cultural traditions. One pupil summed up the evening with a heartfelt message to their peers and teachers:
"Thank you for making me feel at home even when I am miles away. It is one of my favourite events of the whole year, and I would love to help again next year, and the next year."
