The Senior Debate Team delivered an outstanding performance at Wellington School, securing a hard-fought victory that propels them into the Southwest Regional Finals of the ESU debating competition.
A huge congratulations to team members Charlie H, Alistair S, and Roisin O, whose exceptional teamwork, preparation, and eloquence earned them the win. Their dedication and hard work shone through as they skilfully navigated challenging arguments and impressed the judges with their critical thinking and persuasive skills.
The team faced tough competition but remained composed under pressure, ultimately emerging as champions of the evening. This achievement is a testament to their commitment and passion for debate.
The English-Speaking Union’s Schools’ Mace, which is the oldest and largest debating competition for schools in England, hones pupils debate skills in a fun, competitive environment. Working in teams, pupils enhance their speech-writing, public speaking and critical thinking, helping them to excel both in and out of school and giving them a sense of pride in themselves and their achievements.
This fantastic achievement is a testament to the strength of our co-curricular programme here at King’s, which provides pupils with outstanding opportunities to develop their skills beyond the classroom. Through activities like debating, our pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, build confidence, and excel in competitive environments. The debating team’s success highlights how our programme nurtures key skills that will benefit them far beyond their school years. Such enriching experiences like these allows pupils to get a feel for real world scenarios.
Congratulations to the entire team for this incredible accomplishment. As they now prepare to take on the best teams in the Southwest Regional Finals, we wish Charlie, Alistair, and Roisin the very best of luck.
