Rising cricket star, Thomas R, is set to join the England U19 squad in South Africa this month. This 18-player training camp will be essential preparation for their forthcoming series against South Africa in early 2025, marking an exciting milestone for the 16-year-old wicket-keeper/batter.

Thomas’s journey began at King’s Prep, where he joined as a four-year-old in 2011. Over the years, he’s steadily built a name for himself, especially through his performances for Somerset CCC.

Rising through the ranks from Somerset U10s, Thomas joined the Somerset Academy in 2021, further refining his skills. Last summer was particularly notable for him; he competed in every Somerset Second XI T20 match, culminating in his team lifting the Second XI T20 Cup. Thomas demonstrated his consistency and skill with an impressive average of 112.66 in the Second XI Championship, highlighted by a memorable maiden century against Gloucestershire.

Thomas’s talent and leadership were also apparent on the international stage. He made his England U19 debut in a one-day international against Sri Lanka at Hove in July and soon after was appointed captain for the tri-series against Scotland and Ireland. Under his captaincy, the England team won all four matches of the series at Loughborough.

His exceptional summer successes extended to the U18 Super 4s tournament, where he captained the South and West team to win the T20 championship, and recorded a spectacular 110 off 56 balls in a 50-over match against the North team.

Beyond his contributions for Somerset and for England, Thomas also represents Taunton St Andrews in club cricket. During the 2024 season, he scored his maiden century in the West of England Premier League One, amassing 124 runs in an innings against Frocester.

While cricket has been his focus, Thomas is also an impressive multi-sport athlete. In 2023, he was crowned South West U17 Regional Squash Champion and won the National Schools U18 Plate with King’s College. In hockey, he plays for the school’s first team and recently reached the U16 National Finals with Taunton Vale. His golf game is equally remarkable, having represented Somerset junior teams across U12, U14, and U16 levels. Currently, he boasts a handicap of 4.6, further underscoring his all-around athletic ability.

Our Head of Cricket, Rob Woodman, is thrilled about Thomas’ latest achievements. Commenting he said: “Thomas has demonstrated tremendous skill, resilience, and leadership on and off the field. His commitment to cricket and sports in general is inspirational to his peers at King’s. We’re incredibly proud to see him represent England and wish him the very best in South Africa.”

As Thomas prepares to fly out to join his England U19 teammates, we look forward to following his journey, knowing he represents both the school and his country with pride, ambition, and sportsmanship. His achievements are a testament to his hard work and dedication and embody the spirit of excellence encouraged at King’s.
