Futures and the Sixth Form Centre
Our Head of Futures, Julian Mack, speaks about the exciting new Sixth Form Centre project, and also the many ways that King's College is able to effectively support our Sixth Form pupils.
Opened in 2023, our new Sixth Form Centre accommodates a burgeoning programme of education and life skills. With the ambition of creating the best sixth form centre in the South West region, it has been designed by the pupils for the pupils.
The site is situated on the north side of the Chapel and will be modern, flexible, inspiring, technologically advanced, sympathetic to new learning strategies and anchored in sustainable energy principle.
Update - Build Progress Part 3
The scaffolding and hoarding have been removed revealing a stunning modern exterior. The interior is just as impressive, with copious amounts of natural light flooding through large double-glazed first floor windows.
Work continues apace with teams of experts laying underfloor heating, painting and decorating, wiring numerous whiteboards and impressive plasma screens, and installing solar panels and the air distribution system.

Update - Build Progress Part 1
The Centre will be distinctive and serve to emphasise the importance of the final two years at King's. It has huge potential to change the way our Sixth Formers study, providing many opportunities for collaborative working, formal and semi-formal academic experiences and discussions, all of which are crucial to developing intellectual thinkers.
During the first phase, the new buidling started rising from the ground. The structural framework was erected, services were brought online and flooring on all levels established.
This video shows the work completed over a 60 day period prior to the Easter break.
Project Ecology
Everything from wildlife conservation and external lighting, to landfill use and materials has been considered, and over 95% of what was produced from the demolition phase of this project was recycled.
Sustainability and the move toward net zero have been of huge importance. Local contractors have been sought and appointed, and the procurement of materials, including packaging and the distance of travel to the site has been a crucial factor.
This exciting £3million project has been made possible through the careful financial stewardship of our Council and our Director of Finances, Simon Worthy, and also through the generosity of several alumni and other supporters of the school.
There is still plenty of scope for alumni and parents to contribute and can do so in two ways. Either contact our Headmaster to discuss the project in more detail, or by clicking here to donate.
This is a truly exciting time for King's and underlines our present confidence as a school.
