Combined Cadet Force

Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Army Sections

King's Tradition

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is a voluntary organisation whose aim is to enable the development of personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline.

The CCF has a long tradition at King's, and celebrated its Centenary in 2002. We currently have 260 cadets spread amongst the Royal Navy, Royal Marine and Army Sections and our Chindit Columns. Involvement is on a voluntary basis. Our Contingent Commander Lieutenant Colonel Steve King RMR encourages an ethos of leadership training with our senior cadets, where they will take on much of the responsibility for instructing junior cadets under the supervision of officers and staff. It is not surprising that most of our school prefects have had leadership training in the CCF.

Outside the Classroom

We have two Field Days a year which always involves overnight exercises for our senior sections using local training areas. Our Easter Adventure Training week in the Brecon Beacons, run by Capt Steve Shaw, involves a mix of hill walking, caving, mountain biking, rafting and rock climbing.

The Summer CCF Contingent Camp gives the senior cadets the chance to experience more military skills, and includes an overnight exercise, live firing, canoeing and rock climbing. The Third Form Chindit Camp held on Exmoor in July regularly attracts up to half the year group. With a range of exercises such as 'Blindfold Drop', 'Night Fright' and 'Ditch Delight', and with two 24-hour hiking tent experiences, the camp gives the pupils a chance to become more independent and self-reliant.
