Design Technology

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

Steve Jobs, Inventor

Students are actively encouraged to use their imagination and creativity when designing projects, and they work with an enormous variety of different mediums.

Arkwright Scholar Returns

In this exclusive interview, former pupil Will takes us on a tour of the Design Technology building where it all began. He speaks about the scholarship entry criteria, the impact of being a student at our school, and valuable advice for aspiring scholars.

Cutting Edge Technology

Design Technology is an exciting and creative course where you use your imagination to solve problems. Mathematics and science are the building blocks, while teamwork and communication provide the scaffolding that enables pupils to take their ideas to new heights.

Being a coursework-based subject, pupils spend a large proportion of their time researching, designing and making something of their own choice ie. something of personal interest to them. The scope of the course is tremendously broad. Not only is it a very `hands-on’ practical subject but it also delves into numerous areas including marketing, intellectual property rights, ergonomics, manufacturing methods, and materials science to name but a few. Tours to world-renowned engineering establishments such as Jaguar and Morgan further reinforce what is covered in the classroom. Pupils also get the chance to attend enrichment days at Warwick University. These seminars offer insights into the world of design from the likes of Wayne Hemmingway, founder of Red or Dead, and Mathew Beavan, chief exterior designer at Jaguar.

Best in the Country

The DT Centre at King's may not be the biggest department you have seen, but it has been voted the best in the country for four out of the past five years by 'The Good Schools Guide'. What excited them and will excite you is the standard and quality of the work that is produced by our pupils. They are actively encouraged to use their imagination and creativity when designing projects, and work with an enormous variety of mediums.

We have a number of pupils whom have been awarded the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship. In addition to this, we have had pupils recognised for their outstanding DT work by The Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation, which is the most highly prized award given to pupils who have demonstrated a high standard of craftsmanship in their project work.
