Music Technology

You’re not making music, you’re creating a space. You’re building a room, putting some objects in it, and seeing what happens to the objects over time.

Daniel Lopatin, American music producer

Want to learn how to record and produce high quality music? Perhaps you’re interested in using computer software to write music, or want to develop your understanding of music production... studying music technology at A-level may be for you.

Tom Brimelow, Director of Music

What Will I Study?

It is an ideal course for anyone who would enjoy recording, sequencing and composing music, as well as analysing the impact that technology has had throughout the history of popular music.

Students learn the tools and techniques to capture, edit, process and mix an audio recording. One piece is chosen from a list of ten songs and a minimum of five compulsory instruments plus two additional instruments are recorded.

When composing, students create a piece chosen from a set of briefs and learn how to edit, manipulate and structure sounds along the way. One composition is chosen from three briefs and must contain synthesis and sampling/audio manipulation and creative effects.

Students have access to the latest Apple iMac computers and software including Logic Pro X and also the recording studio in the music school, equipped with everything necessary to make high quality recordings.
