Navy Section Activities

Our Royal Navy Section is run by Lt Laurence Mason, assisted by David Jessep. The training involves working on various seamanship and general military skills such as rope work, knowledge of the Royal Navy, leadership tasks, drill and water-based activities. Monday afternoons during the summer and autumn months are mostly spent sailing at Wimbleball Lake on Exmoor, only 45 minutes away from King's, a great facility to have so close to the school. The Fourth Form recruits start their year by having a taster of Naval life and visiting the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. They follow the CCF RN Syllabus which is divided into three main parts:

Part One The Individual (keeping of uniform, drill and leadership abilities)

Part Two RN Knowledge (knowledge of RN ships, RN history, RN customs, etc.)

Part Three Afloat training (seamanship, sailing)

Courses and Qualifications

During the Fifth Form cadets are encouraged to participate in holiday courses such as canoeing, climbing, first aid and leadership and complete an NCO cadre course. In the Sixth Form, as NCOs they help instruct junior cadets. Cadets can gain nationally recognised sailing proficiency certificates, led by Lt Mason, who is himself a qualified Dinghy Instructor. This gives us the opportunity to further the activity of sailing and prepare those cadets who want to qualify as AI and DIs. Overnight Field Days are held either at Jupiter Point, Plymouth or at HMS Bristol in Portsmouth.
